OUTPERFORMING THE ONBOARD FLIGHT COMPUTER
Today’s on-board flight management computers have a limited capability for optimizing the flight. Wind and temperature data are normally stored only at waypoints and with just one or a few limited altitudes. The on-board computer is limited to use a simplified aircraft performance model and calculation logic due to hardware and memory constraints. With modern technical advances in weather forecasting the flight computer is simply not able to take full advantage of the data available.
AVTECHs Cruise Profile Optimizer works together with and acts as an extension of the optimization capabilities in the on-board flight computer. The tool is easy to use and to deploy as a service without requiring any investments in new onboard hardware. It is ground based and communicates with the aircraft in real-time and calculates the cost-optimal flight profile through the current atmosphere.
The Norwegian fleet has since November 2019 used the Optimizer in the operation and just for a three months period their potential total saving were great.
The results from November 2019 – February 2020:

TRULY COST INDEX OPTIMISED FLIGHT PROFILE
The optimizer ensures the total flight profile is the most cost-efficient with respect to the selected cost index for the flight, thereby taking the important balance between time and fuel cost into account. This means the service is fully compatible with use of a dynamic cost index.
GROUND BASED POWERHOUSE
By performing calculations on the ground, it is possible to make full use of modern computational resources and a high-resolution weather forecast. This also allows information sharing of data to other stakeholders such as OCC and ATC.
PILOT AND AIRLINE FRIENDLY
The result is delivered to the cockpit in a short and readable message that enables the crew to make the necessary tactical decisions towards flying a more cost-efficient path. The cost saving of flying the recommended path is calculated against the operational flightplan and displayed to the crew. With this information pilots can select the most optimal flight level along the flight and thereby save fuel, CO2 emissions and time. The flight crew receives an easy to read report on the display, printer or EFB providing decision support for selecting the most optimal flight level.
